Kramnik at the Carlucci
Another Saturday, another consultation game at Caffe Carlucci. Isaac and Bryan, playing white, imagined themselves as Kramnik showing Kasparov why he would have to give up his beloved KID. But it's one thing thinking you're Kramnik and another thing playing like him, as Michael, with his flair for attack, and Mark demonstrated.
8.b4 was premature. Instead 8.Bg5 is the most popular move in the position and scores a whopping 46% of wins for white in the 365Chess database, which would be enough to put anyone off this opening. But the real problems for white only started after the strategic disaster 13.f3 which fatally weakened the black squares around the king. White desperately tried to get his dark-squared bishop back over to the king-side but it was too little too late and black crashed through in classic KID sacrificial style.
The position in the diagram is near the end with black to play and mate in 3.
