A coalescence of bad timing conspired against us to ensure that three of the team pool were unfortunately unable to play, meaning that we were forced to default on board six, significantly denting hopes of a positive result. Still, the top three boards were very evenly matched on grades, so anything could still happen. Bill Falconer quickly attained a winning position by out-calculating his opponent on Board 1, and Isaac Browning enjoyed the advantage of the bishop pair in an open position. Lee Bishop won a couple of pawns thanks to an error of judgement from Derek Raffan, but came under heavy assault from Raffan’s well placed minor pieces. Ally Forrester played a fairly peaceful game on board four, resulting in an endgame where neither side could make progress without compromising their position. A draw was agreed shortly thereafter. Team captain Chris Hampton faced a tough assignment against Craig van den Heever on board five, but fought hard before eventually succumbing. On one and two, both Falconer and Browning had converted their advantages into full points, so the match all came down to board three. Unfortunately for the Dragons, black’s attack proved too strong, and Raffan emerged with victory from the chaotic position. This result meant the Dragons went down by the narrowest of margins, bringing back painful memories of last season, when too many matches were lost by the same scoreline.
